Navigating Trump's America: The Donald Trump tax plan is something we've seen before

In his first 100 days, Trump rolled out a plan to cut taxes across the board. The plan would add trillions of dollars to the deficit while lowering the tax burden on all Americans, particularly the wealthiest. "Tax relief is right, and tax relief is a right."

That plan, and those words, are not President Donald Trump's. That was George W. Bush's. Bush proposed the first of two "Bush tax cut" bills in 2001. He followed through on promises he made less than a month after his inauguration.

Now, Trump is making his play at cutting taxes, bigly. The Trump administration on Wednesday promised the "biggest individual and business tax cut in American history." The plan is only one-page right now, a minimalist beginning to negotiations with Congress that will eventually yield a bill that could be hundreds of pages or longer.

We've seen this movie before: The White House promises to cut taxes, especially on businesses and the wealthy, to spur economic growth. Read More

'Survivor' Ponderosa: Former jury members reveal what really goes on after being voted out

Hannah Shapiro was a runner-up on Survivor season 33: Millennials vs. Gen X. You can follow Hannah on Twitter@HannahLilNessen.

I remember flying into Fiji for Survivor season 33,Millennialsvs. Gen X. It was a long flight with a group of strangers I wasn't allowed to talk to yet. We must have looked funny to airport goers a large, eclectic group who were clearly not speaking to one another. We took a plane, a bus and a boat and finally arrived at a small island filled with bungalows. There was one large dining bungalow, complete with a bar and a buffet area. That's when I started freaking out. We were at Ponderosa.

Welcome to Ponderosa. For those a little less Survivor nerd savvy, Ponderosa is where voted out contestants go after they leave the island. Those who get voted off too early in the game to join the jury all gather at Ponderosa before they are shipped away. Read More

Algiers' The Underside of Power video links today's political resistance with its roots

You don't know what real power is until you're on the wrong side of it.

Algiers frontman Franklin James Fisher cannot remember for the life of him where that quote came from. "It was probably from something really stupid," he said in a recent interview with Mic. But still, it resonated with him, maintaining such a significant portion of his fascination that it formed the cornerstone of the band's upcoming record,The Underside of Power, announced Thursday with a title track and accompanying video.

"At that point you're completely subject to whatever that person, whatever that institution wants to impose upon you," Fisher explained, drawing a metaphor of the powerful, represented by a boot, crushing a seemingly helpless creature underfoot. Read More

Samantha Bee says visiting Rikers Island felt like a Caribbean vacation

Samantha Bee's latest comments about Rikers Island are a cringe-inducing example of tone-deaf privilege.

In a conversation with fellow comedian Lena Dunham published Wednesday in the Hollywood Reporter, late-night host Bee, whose show Full Frontal airs weekly on TBS, described filming a segment at Rikers Island, New York City's massive jail complex.

While visiting, she said, Bee had to put her phone "in a lockbox for eight hours," which she said made visiting Rikers as relaxing as"a Caribbean vacation."

"I emerged from Rikers, and everyone was like, 'Your skin is shining.' And it was because I've never been more relaxed. Read More

100 days of Trump brings no regrets for supporters and people of color are paying for it

One of the more remarkable things about Donald Trump's first 100 days as president is how comfortable his supporters are with what he has done. An ABC News/Washington Post poll published Sunday found that 96% of people who voted for Trump in November still believe it was "the right thing to do." Only 2% regret it.

This remains the case after what seems by most standards to have been a disastrous and embarrassing first three months. Trump's failures have been legion. His vows to "repeal and replace" the Affordable Care Act went up in flames after Republicans couldn't agree on the terms of the replacement, even though they'd had seven years to do so. His promises to "drain the swamp" of Washington insiders and special interests have deflated beneath his cabinet of far-right politicians and corporate billionaires.

Trump's staff has been roiled by evidence that members colluded with the Russian government to sway the election. Read More

Trump started an anti-immigrant hotline. People are trolling it with tales of aliens.

The resistance is really phoning it in.

On Wednesday, Trump administration launched the Victims of Immigrant Crime Engagement Office, which got Trump booed when he first unveiled it during his joint speech to Congress on Feb. 28. With the launch of VOICE also came the opening of VOICE's official hotline, which fields calls from those who allege they are the victim of a crime carried out by a immigrant.

According to BuzzFeed, since the hotline's launch, the phone lines have been tied up with calls about undocumented aliens from outer space.

Given that the launch of the hotline coincided with Alien Day, people put two and two together and launched a plan to inundate the hotline with stories of alien abductions.

Wouldn't it be a shame if millions of people called this hotline to report their encounters with aliens of the UFO-variety. Read More

This Texas 6th-grader was threatened with suspension all because of a haircut

If you saw a picture of sixth-grader Xavier Davis' hair, you probably wouldn't understand what all the fuss is about.

At first glance, it looks like many other young boy's haircuts, but with two razor cuts in the side. It's a popular style worn by celebrities, including soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo and rapper Chris Brown.
